WHAT IS A DPE?

What is a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE)?

A Designated Pilot Examiner, or DPE, is not an FAA employee or contractor. Instead, under 14 CFR Part 183, the FAA authorizes private individuals to perform practical tests, issue certificates, and carry out certain administrative duties for the FAA. DPEs are not considered FAA employees, nor are they Aviation Safety Inspectors (ASI) or Aviation Safety Technicians (AST).

DPEs operate under the authority of Part 183, along with regulations found in Parts 61, 67, 91, 141, FAA Order 8900.2C, 8000.95D, applicable Practical Test Standards (PTS) or Airman Certification Standards (ACS) documents, and any other relevant FAA rules or local policies.
